Next time you’re feeling down, try this anti-inflammatory and healthy turmeric shot with fresh or powdered turmeric. You can make this recipe with or without a blender or juicer.

Wellness shots taste great and have anti-inflammatory properties.
Turmeric specifically fights infections and is good for your body and your brain. This root of the ginger family fights inflammation, improves memory and reduces the risk of heart disease.
You can buy turmeric shots at your local health food store or juice bars, but they’re expensive. That’s why I like to make mine at home. You only need four ingredients and less than 20 minutes to conjure up a turmeric shot.
You can use fresh turmeric root to get as many nutrients as possible, but you can also use the powder if you’re short on time or ingredients. All you need is turmeric, lemon, coconut water and black pepper.
Why you need this recipe
- Brands like Vive and Kor cost around $4 for a 2-ounce shot. While this may not seem expensive, it can add up if you want more than one!
- Turmeric wellness shots are a great way to improve gut health and a natural way to boost energy levels.
- Homemade turmeric shots are super easy to make, like “put all ingredients in blender and puree” very simple.
main ingredients

Turmeric Root – Turmeric root is a close relative of ginger root. It has an earthy and bitter taste with a bright orange interior. It is known for many scientifically proven health benefits.
lemon – Lemons are packed with vitamin C, which lowers the risk of heart disease.
coconut water – Refreshing coconut water tames the taste of lemon and turmeric. It’s also high in potassium and naturally sweet. If you don’t like the taste, you can use water instead. However, they lose some of the natural sweetness.
Black pepper – Black pepper might seem like an odd ingredient for a wellness shot, but it’s a conscious choice. Black pepper contains a substance called piperine which increases the absorption of curcumin – the main component of turmeric.

Step one
If you’re using fresh turmeric root, gently peel off the skin with a knife or the back of a spoon.

Cut the turmeric into pieces and place in a high speed blender.
step three
Add the lemon juice, coconut water and black pepper.
step four
Turn blender to high and blend for 30-45 seconds or until ingredients are smooth.
step five
Pour the mixture through a nut milk bag or cheesecloth to remove the pulp.

step six
Transfer the juice to a glass or pitcher. Drink immediately or refrigerate for up to 4 days.

- INSTRUCTIONS FOR USING DRIED GROUND TURMERIC: If you don’t have a juicer or blender, you can make this recipe with ground turmeric. Simply combine 2 teaspoons of ground turmeric into a jar with a lid. Next, add the lemon juice, coconut water, and black pepper to the jar with the dried turmeric. Place the lid on the jar and shake vigorously until the ground turmeric is well mixed with the juice.
- Ground turmeric is made from dried turmeric and can be found in the spice section of most grocery stores. Fresh turmeric can be found in the refrigerated section of most health food stores. It is usually kept near the fresh ginger.
- Coconut water is a clear beverage that can be found in the chilled or ambient beverage section of most grocery stores. Look for unsweetened coconut water
- The black pepper isn’t strictly necessary for the recipe, but it can help the turmeric be more bioavailable and easier for your body to absorb. In other words, pepper helps absorb turmeric.
- Please note that fresh turmeric root may temporarily stain your hands or any surface it touches. To remove the stains, soak your blender or cutting board in a mixture of 2 parts hot water and 1 part distilled vinegar. Then wash the items as usual and the stain should come off more easily. Otherwise, the yellow spot will fade over time.
- Add fresh or dried ginger to make ginger turmeric shots. You will need either a 1/2-inch piece of fresh ginger or up to 1/4 teaspoon of dried ginger.
